Explain that WhatsApp has banned 37.16 lakh accounts in India in November. WhatsApp banned 23.24 lakh accounts in the country in October, out of which 8.11 lakh accounts were actively banned. WhatsApp said in the November monthly report published under the Information Technology Rules 2021, ‘Between November 1 and November 30, 2022, 37,16,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned. Of these, 9,90,000 accounts were actively banned.

The stringent IT rule, implemented last year, mandates large digital platforms with more than 50 lakh users to publish compliance reports every month, detailing complaints received and action taken.

The government last week announced rules to set up a grievance appeal mechanism against arbitrary content moderation, deactivation or removal decisions by big tech companies. WhatsApp received a higher number of appeals from users in November for banning accounts as compared to October. WhatsApp received 946 complaints from users in November, including appeals to ban 830 accounts. Of these, action was taken against only 73 accounts.
